How we Calculate our Hits

Unlike some sites that stick a counter on the front page (although we've done that too!), and tot up every file served as people visiting, we at surfinfo are a little more cautious.

It's tough to get a good feel for exactly how many people actually read SurfInfo - browsers are set up to only download only changed (non-cached) information so even our logs don't register everything. We also have the added problem that many of our own files need to spread among several servers in order to keep the main load down. This is invisible to you but they don't get logged either.
Averaged out though, every face at the screen counts for about 6 lines on the logfile. So if the log file says 30,000 files in a particular day, that's about 5000 people (Or 1 person 5000 times I guess!)

Don't trust my math? - Surfinfo is not afraid for you to see the RAW NUMBERS. Check them out for yourself.

Curious about any of this? Drop me a line :- (surf@surfinfo.com)
